First Recorded Account of a White Shark Agonistic Pectoral Fin Depression Behavior at Guadalupe Island, Mexico

نویسندگان

چکیده

An agonistic display by a white shark was observed and photographed during cage dive at Guadalupe Island in November 2015. Exhibiting exaggerated pectoral fin depression, behaviors have been previously described several species. This account may be the first record of close proximity to caged diver, exhibiting strong depression significantly dipped, mid-agonistic display. Such displays should considered as aggressive potentially life-threatening those using ocean for recreational or professional purposes.

Pectoral Fin of the Megamouth Shark: Skeletal and Muscular Systems, Skin Histology, and Functional Morphology

This is the first known report on the skeletal and muscular systems, and the skin histology, of the pectoral fin of the rare planktivorous megamouth shark Megachasma pelagios. The pectoral fin is characterized by three features: 1) a large number of segments in the radial cartilages; 2) highly elastic pectoral fin skin; and 3) a vertically-rotated hinge joint at the pectoral fin base. These fea...

A Rare Use of a Shark’s Fin? Pectoral Fin Scooping of a Sharksucker from The Flank Area of a Female Blacktip Shark

Sharks react in a variety of ways when sharksuckers attach to their bodies. Here, an unobserved behavior is described in which a blacktip shark, Carcharhinus limbatus, uses a pectoral fin in a scoop-like manner to specifically target the removal of a sharksucker, Echeneis naucrates, in the flank area. This coordinated use of the pectoral fin indicates an established bout in the shark’s repertoi...

Dorsal fin in the white shark, Carcharodon carcharias: a dynamic stabilizer for fast swimming.

Transverse sections of the skin in the dorsal fin of the white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, tiger shark, Galeocerdo cuvier, and spotted raggedtooth shark, Carcharias taurus, show large numbers of dermal fiber bundles, which extend from the body into the fin. The bundles are tightly grouped together in staggered formation (not arranged in a straight line or in rows). This arrangement of dermal...

A biorobotic model of the sunfish pectoral fin for investigations of fin sensorimotor control.

A comprehensive understanding of the control of flexible fins is fundamental to engineering underwater vehicles that perform like fish, since it is the fins that produce forces which control the fish's motion. However, little is known about the fin's sensory system or about how fish use sensory information to modulate the fin and to control propulsive forces. As part of a research program that ...

Affinity Matting for Pixel-accurate Fin Shape Recovery from Great White Shark Imagery

The objective of this paper is to obtain pixel-accurate reconstructions of white shark fins given automatically generated coarse pre-segmentations. Reconstruction performance is compared for affinity matting, colour matting and GrabCut against expert annotated ground truth for a test-set of 120 fin images taken in the wild. For the present domain, we find affinity matting able to most accuratel...
